“What Could Be Worse Than Death”
This is the question the kids needed to ponder as they attended the conference. This year’s guest speaker was the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) group. These individuals came to tell the students of their stories and how their lives were changed because of substance use.
Then the students had the opportunity to learn about Jacqueline Saburido. Jacqui’s life was changed in the blink of an eye when a drunk driver hit the car her and her friends were riding in. The car caught fire and Jacqui was trapped inside. Over 60% of her body was burned but she survived. Reggie Stephey, the drunk driver, was only 18 years old and a star football player. He was sentenced to seven years in prison. If you would like to learn more about Jacqui and her story, click on the following link: www.texas.org/jacqui.html.
The students also observed a mock crash scene. Some of their fellow classmates were the victims in this wreck. |
